Strings
Game Overview
Connect letters to find theme words and the elusive Spangram! A relaxing, logic-based word puzzle.
How to Play
Drag across adjacent letters (any direction) to trace a themed word. All the words relate to the puzzle's theme. One special word â the Spangram â is longer and ties the theme together. Find every theme word plus the Spangram to clear the puzzle. Stuck? Find extra valid words (not in the theme) to earn hints.
About Strings
Strings is our take on the word-hunt puzzle format the New York Times popularised with Strands. Every puzzle is a 6-by-8 grid of letters where every single letter belongs to a word â there are no filler letters. Your job is to find all the themed words by tracing connected paths of adjacent letters, plus one long Spangram that captures the theme and stretches across the board.
What makes the format satisfying is that it's a closed system: because every letter is used exactly once, finding one word narrows down where the others can be. It rewards patient scanning rather than fast guessing, which makes it a great wind-down puzzle.
How to play well. Start by reading the theme and brainstorming words that fit before you even look at the grid. Then hunt for the Spangram first â it's the longest word and usually the backbone of the solution, so finding it carves the board into manageable regions. When you're stuck, the game rewards you for finding any valid English word (even one that isn't part of the theme) by building toward a hint. So if you spot a random word, grab it â it's not wasted effort.
Build notes. We have 30 hand-themed puzzles, and every one is generated and verified by a script that guarantees the grid is perfectly consistent: each word's letter path is a connected chain of adjacent cells, every cell is covered exactly once, and the on-screen letters always spell the intended words. That verification matters â a single misplaced letter would make a puzzle unsolvable, and hand-building word-packed grids is notoriously error-prone. The dictionary that powers the bonus-word hints holds tens of thousands of valid English words.
Frequently Asked Questions
What is the Spangram?
It's the one special word in each puzzle that sums up the theme and spans a long path across the grid. It's highlighted differently from the regular theme words when you find it.
Do the words go in straight lines?
Words are connected chains of adjacent letters â they can run horizontally and bend as they go, so trace carefully. Every letter on the board is part of some word.
What happens if I find a word that isn't in the theme?
It counts toward a hint! Finding valid non-theme English words builds up your hint meter, so exploring the board is always useful even when you're stuck.
How many puzzles are there?
Thirty themed puzzles right now, from Ocean Life and Weather to Dinosaurs and Castle. Your progress is saved, so you'll resume where you left off.
Is this the same as the NYT Strands game?
It's the same family of puzzle â find themed words plus a spangram in a fully-packed letter grid â but with our own original themes and puzzles, playable unlimited and free.
